A Clyde Stubblefield Documentary Is In The Works, Raising Money to Continue Production.

Filmmaker launches crowdfunding campaign to support the production of a feature length documentary about influential drummer and Chattanooga native, Clyde Stubblefield.

NEW YORK, NY, April, 5, 2021

Trevor Banks, a Brooklyn, NY based documentary filmmaker, announced today that he is raising funds to resume production of Give The Drummer Some, a feature length documentary about the life and influence of trailblazing drummer Clyde Stubblefield. Banks has set out to raise $10,000 on the crowdfunding platform, Seed&Spark, in an effort to ignite the next phase of filming on the east coast. The crowdfunding campaign runs until Wednesday, May 5.

Clyde Stubblefield, a Chattanooga native most known as the former drummer for James Brown, transcended the genre of funk music that he helped pioneer. The revolutionary breakbeat he played on a record called Funky Drummer made Clyde one the most sampled musicians in history, and in turn became a cornerstone during the evolution of hip-hop. He was named as one of the greatest drummers in history by Rolling Stone magazine and LA Weekly. Unfortunately Clyde’s contributions to the world went uncredited and unrecognized, resulting in him missing out on substantial earnings and leading to a life of perpetual exploitation, missed opportunities and health issues. Clyde passed away from kidney failure in 2017.

Banks, who met Stubblefield in his adoptive town of Madison, WI, began this project in 2015. With nothing but a camera and microphone he was granted unprecedented access during the final years of Stubblefield’s life. In addition to capturing some of Stubblefield’s final interviews, performances and medical treatments, Banks has filmed interviews with some of Stubblefield’s former bandmates including John “Jab’o Starks, Fred Wesley, Fred Thomas and funk icon George Clinton.

“I consider myself extremely fortunate to have known and spent time with Clyde,” says Banks. “I not only cherished our friendship, but I cherished his existence. I’m beyond committed to telling his story and ensuring that his legacy as a pioneer and innovator becomes cemented within American music history.”
